The Zwickau district court, a building dating back to 1853, is currently undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment. Originally used as a tax office and later extended, the listed building is now being refurbished as a district court. The ongoing work includes both careful restoration of the historical substance and a modern extension that adapts the building to contemporary requirements.
The highlights:
- New building on Humboldtstrasse: A modern extension is being built to the west of the existing building. The façade of the new building will be stylishly adapted to the historic building.
- Connecting the existing buildings: The existing parts of the building will be brought together with new connections in order to optimize use and make the space more efficient.
- New atrium: The formerly open inner courtyard will be covered with a coffered ceiling and glass elements and transformed into two spacious meeting rooms
The entire building is being brought up to the latest state of the art. This includes the installation of modern elevators, new stairwells and the complete renewal of the building services, including sound and fire protection systems. In addition, unused areas will be developed and the top floor will be extended. Detention cells will be installed in the basement and the entire existing structure will be extensively renovated.
The integration of the listed building fabric and the extensive renovation measures pose particular challenges. Specialized methods are used to ensure the structural integrity of the historic building. These include high-pressure injections to stabilize the foundations and the improvement of the subsoil using the DSV method. As the new building is located in the groundwater area, additional measures such as sheet piling and groundwater lowering are necessary.
The project aims to improve the functionality of the district court while preserving the historic architecture.
