The honorary management committee elected him to the position at its meeting on 25 October 2023. He replaces the previous chairwoman Gunda Röstel. Jörg Thiele has a long-standing relationship with TU Dresden.

As the central body of the university, the University Council is responsible for overseeing economic management, among other things. It makes recommendations and comments on matters relating to research, teaching, study programmes and knowledge transfer that affect the entire university.
