Under the title "Let's save the climate!", the guests discussed what contribution planning engineers can make to mitigate the consequences of climate change and protect people.
Moderated by Susanne Wieseler, VBI President Jörg Thiele and NRW State Chair Michael Hippe opened the congress.
In the panel discussion Better Building in Times of Climate Change, Bernd Düsterdiek from the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, Dirk Schulz as Councillor for Technology from Erftstadt, Stephan Ellerhorst from Sweco and NRW State Chairman Michael Hippe discussed how towns and municipalities can do more for climate protection together with engineering companies and how climate change will alter future urban planning. Dirk Schulz was able to report on his experiences of the flood disaster around the Ahr valley in 2021 and appealed to politicians in his contributions to enable pragmatic solutions and lean approval procedures.
The final point was set by Sarah Edinger and Daniel Eid, who, as young representatives of the planning engineers, spoke about climate protection as an attractive factor for young people and emphasised that today more than ever, young people want an activity that is socially meaningful for their profession. In doing so, they picked up on the core messages of the VBI generation survey published last year, which showed that the younger generation, in addition to health and confidence, above all values being able to make a contribution to society as a whole through their profession.
