Deep down for a green future - Dresden's district heating network is being expanded

14 August 2024

A high proportion of final energy consumption in this country is accounted for by heat supply, which also causes a considerable amount of CO2 emissions. According to the Renewable Energies Heat Act (EEWärmeG), new buildings must use renewable heat sources. In order to meet these requirements, the district heating network in Dresden is being significantly expanded as part of municipal heating planning. Existing buildings will also be connected to the new district heating network.

An important project in this context is the expansion of the district heating distribution pipeline (FWV) in the Leutewitzerstrasse and Grillparzerstrasse area. The FWV will be laid from the Leutewitzer Straße / Lübecker Straße junction to Bahnstraße, with a total length of around 800 meters and a pipe diameter of DA315 / DN200. Plastic casing pipes will be used throughout the entire construction area. This project is part of the further expansion of the district heating network in the direction of the SachsenEnergie power plant in Löbtau in order to provide the required pipeline in the newly developed area.

The integration of this project into the schedule of a construction project of the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe is particularly challenging. The Lübecker Straße / Kloppstockstraße junction must be reached by a fixed deadline. An additional challenge is the coordination with another superordinate construction project in Hamburger Straße. From the start of the construction work in Hamburger Straße, road closures are no longer permitted in the affected construction area. This requires extremely precise planning and implementation of the project under considerable time pressure.
